British Industry

Something in the paper again today about the decline of British (Manufacturing) Industry. Did you know that there are 10,000 shipbuilders in the country, along with 9,000 building and cilvil engeering technicians and over 209,000 software professionals?? Seems like a lot to me - but come to think of it, I'm sure that most of you reading this are software professionals!! :-)

mate thats foook all...we've had more bloody polish immigrants in the last 2 years come IN to our country than we have engineers in total (half a million polish and eastern block new immigrants since 2004).
GEC used to employ 200000 people now the french ALSTOM have sold it all and shut it down and theres now about 8000 in total in the country. Siemens is pulling back as is ABB. Rover is dead we have no cars. NADA!!! Britain is living on borrowed time.

its bollax.

Trying to find a builder in West London who isn't Polish is really hard! Although our Polish builders have been OK (not brilliant, but OK).

The biggest problem I come across is Software Engineers who believe they should be paid the silly money that they got over the Millenium. In the end they accept the pay offer which is about 1/3 of what they wanted (as they are desperate for money in the current environment), but do you a really shit job.

Rover dead? Don't I know it! 10 weeks it took to get a new door for my MG zr! That'll teach me to be patriotic.

My Uncle Roger used to drive a Rover in the bad old days. Bang the door with your hand and the window would fall down...

Still, who needs heavy industry. Burger and fries with that? ;-)

Gareth... will you build:

A) What I think I want?
B) What you think I want?
C) What you think would be cool for me to have?
D) What I need?

We usually end up with somewhere between A and B.
NB Getting D is impossible!
